A higher level of care

Depression treatment for adults who need more support now

Depression can affect every part of life: sleep, appetite, energy, motivation, work, relationships, and the ability to feel connected to the people and things that once mattered. For some adults, outpatient therapy and medication management are enough. For others, depression becomes too heavy to manage alone.

Mental Wellness KS provides a higher level of care for adults whose depression is interfering with daily functioning, safety, relationships, work, or the ability to maintain stability at home. Our depression treatment program is designed for adults who need structure, psychiatric support, therapy, family involvement, and a clear treatment plan.

When to consider residential care

Signs depression may require residential treatment

Residential depression treatment may be appropriate when depression is no longer manageable through weekly therapy or standard outpatient care.

  • Difficulty getting out of bed or completing basic daily tasks
  • Severe isolation or withdrawal from family and friends
  • Persistent hopelessness, numbness, or emotional exhaustion
  • Missed work, school, or major responsibilities
  • Sleep disruption or sleeping most of the day
  • Significant appetite or weight changes
  • Increasing alcohol or substance use to cope
  • Depression with anxiety, PTSD, or trauma symptoms
  • Repeated crisis episodes or recent psychiatric hospitalization
  • Limited progress with outpatient therapy or medication alone
  • Family members are worried and unsure what to do next

If you or someone you love is in immediate danger, call 988, call 911, or go to the nearest emergency room. Mental Wellness KS is not an emergency crisis response service.

Stepping down through care

PHP and IOP for depression

Depression treatment often works best as a continuum. Some clients begin in residential treatment and then step down into PHP or IOP as symptoms stabilize. Others may begin at PHP or IOP if they do not require 24/7 residential support. PHP for depression provides six hours of structured programming five days per week; IOP for depression provides three hours of programming five days per week, with morning or afternoon tracks available. Supportive housing is available for clients traveling to Palm Springs for care.

Partial Hospitalization Program for depression

Mon–Fri · 8 AM – 3 PM · 6–12 weeks, typical

Structured daytime care with therapy, groups, psychiatry, and family support. PHP may be appropriate as a step-down from residential treatment, or as a starting point for clients who need full clinical days but can spend evenings at home or in supportive housing.

What we treat

Types of depression we treat

Depression does not always look the same from one person to the next. Some people experience clear depressive episodes. Others live with a lower-grade depression for years. Some struggle with depression connected to trauma, PTSD, bipolar disorder, grief, or repeated treatment attempts that have not brought enough relief.

Major Depressive Disorder

Distinct episodes of significant low mood, loss of interest, and related symptoms lasting weeks or months. The most familiar form of depression, and one that often responds well to a combination of therapy and properly dosed medication. Major depressive disorder treatment is one of the most common reasons adults come to us.

Persistent Depressive Disorder

A chronic, lower-grade depression that has run in the background of life for two years or longer. Many adults describe it as a baseline rather than an episode. Persistent depressive disorder treatment tends to be steady and sustained, addressing both the symptoms and the long-term patterns around them.

Treatment-Resistant Depression

Depression that has not improved after multiple appropriate treatment attempts. It does not mean recovery is out of reach. It often means the next step needs more structure, with psychiatric support and therapy working together rather than separately.

Trauma-Related Depression

Depression driven by a specific trauma or sustained adversity. Standard antidepressant trials alone often fall short here. Trauma-related depression treatment includes trauma-focused therapy, such as EMDR and Cognitive Processing Therapy, alongside the depression work.

Depression with Anxiety or PTSD

Depression frequently appears alongside other conditions. When depression occurs with anxiety or PTSD, treating both at the same time, rather than one at a time, gives adults a more stable and lasting recovery.

Bipolar Depression

The depressive phase of bipolar disorder. The presentation can look similar to other forms of depression, but treatment differs, which is why careful screening on admission matters.

Seasonal or Hormonal Depression

Depression that tracks with seasonal light changes or hormonal shifts, such as postpartum, perimenopause, or thyroid-related changes. A medical review is part of a thorough evaluation, and the depression itself is treated with full clinical care.

Our approach

How depression treatment works at Mental Wellness KS

Depression treatment is not only about talking through symptoms. It is about helping clients rebuild the structure, connection, support, and clinical stability that depression often takes away.

Treatment may include:

  • Psychiatric evaluation and medication management
  • Individual therapy
  • Group therapy
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
  • Behavioral Activation
  • DBT skills
  • EMDR when trauma is part of the clinical picture
  • Cognitive Processing Therapy when PTSD or trauma-related symptoms are present
  • Psychodynamic therapy
  • Family education and support
  • Mindfulness, fitness, art therapy, outings, and structured daily routines
  • Discharge planning and step-down support

When treatment has not worked yet

Treatment-resistant depression and medication support

Many adults seeking depression treatment have already tried therapy, medication, or both. Some have changed medications several times. Others have stopped taking medication, felt unsure whether it helped, or continued to struggle despite doing what was recommended.

At Mental Wellness KS, clients receive psychiatric evaluation and ongoing medication support when clinically appropriate. Medication decisions are individualized and coordinated with the broader treatment plan.

Treatment-resistant depression generally refers to depression that has not improved after multiple appropriate treatment attempts. Our program supports adults whose symptoms have not improved with traditional outpatient care by providing a more structured treatment environment with psychiatric support, therapy, trauma-informed care, and daily clinical programming.

Trauma-focused care

Depression, trauma, PTSD, and veterans

Mental Wellness KS is veteran-owned and trauma-focused. While we serve adults from all backgrounds, we have a strong understanding of the needs of veterans, active-duty service members, and families affected by trauma.

For some clients, depression is connected to combat exposure, military service, moral injury, grief, early adversity, chronic stress, or PTSD. Our team provides clinically grounded, trauma-informed treatment for veterans designed to help clients stabilize, process symptoms, rebuild structure, and develop long-term support.

For families

Family support for depression

Depression often affects the entire family system. Loved ones may feel scared, frustrated, helpless, or unsure whether to push, step back, or seek a higher level of care. At Mental Wellness KS, family support and education are part of treatment when clinically appropriate. We help families better understand depression, communicate more effectively, support treatment participation, and prepare for the next phase of care.

Supportive phrases families can use

  • “I've noticed you haven't seemed like yourself, and I'm here.”
  • “You do not have to explain everything right now.”
  • “Can I help with one small thing today?”
  • “Would it help if I made the call with you?”
  • “I am not going anywhere.”

If your loved one mentions thoughts of self-harm or suicide, take it seriously. Ask directly, then call 988, the national Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, or go to the nearest emergency room.

Insurance coverage

Insurance coverage for depression treatment

Many commercial insurance plans cover depression treatment when it is medically necessary. Coverage depends on the plan, benefits, medical necessity, and level of care. Our admissions team can verify your benefits and help you understand your options.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions about depression treatment

What is the difference between sadness and clinical depression?

Sadness is a normal, temporary response to a difficult situation, and it usually lifts as circumstances change. Clinical depression is a medical condition in which low mood, loss of interest, fatigue, and related symptoms persist for two weeks or longer and begin to interfere with sleep, work, relationships, and daily functioning. Depression treatment is appropriate when these symptoms are persistent and limiting daily life.

Do I need residential depression treatment?

Residential depression treatment may be appropriate when depression is no longer manageable through weekly therapy or standard outpatient care, for example difficulty completing daily tasks, severe withdrawal, persistent hopelessness, or limited progress with medication alone. Residential care provides 24/7 support and daily structure. Our admissions team can help determine whether residential treatment, PHP, or IOP is the right starting point.

Do you offer inpatient depression treatment?

Many people use the word “inpatient” when searching for a higher level of mental health care. Mental Wellness KS offers residential depression treatment, PHP, and IOP. If someone is in immediate danger or requires acute medical stabilization, a psychiatric hospital may be the appropriate first step. If they are medically stable but need structured daily care, residential treatment may be a better fit.

What is treatment-resistant depression?

Treatment-resistant depression generally refers to depression that has not improved after multiple appropriate treatment attempts, such as two or more antidepressant trials at an adequate dose and duration. It does not mean recovery is not possible. It often means the next step needs more structure than monthly outpatient care, with psychiatric support, therapy, and trauma-informed care delivered together.

How long does depression treatment take?

Length of care varies by individual needs. A typical residential stay is 30 to 45 days, often followed by 6 to 12 weeks of PHP and IOP as clients step down. Many adults move between levels of care as symptoms change, and the clinical team reviews progress regularly.

Will insurance cover depression treatment?

Many commercial insurance plans cover depression treatment when it is medically necessary. Mental Wellness KS works with many in-network and out-of-network providers, including United Healthcare, Cigna, Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, TRICARE, and TriWest. Coverage varies by plan, benefits, and level of care. Our admissions team can verify your benefits at no cost.

Do you treat veterans with depression or PTSD?

Yes. Mental Wellness KS is veteran-owned and trauma-focused, and both founders are certified trauma professionals. We treat veterans and active-duty service members whose depression may be connected to combat exposure, military service, grief, or PTSD, and we work with TRICARE and TriWest.

Can I stay on my current psychiatric medication?

In most cases, yes. Our Medical Director, a board-certified psychiatrist, reviews each client's medication on admission. If a change is clinically appropriate, it is made carefully and collaboratively rather than abruptly.

Do you offer TMS, ketamine, or ECT?

Mental Wellness KS does not currently offer TMS, ketamine therapy, or ECT on-site. However, we provide psychiatric evaluation, medication management, psychotherapy, trauma-focused care, and structured residential, PHP, and IOP treatment for adults whose depression has not improved with traditional outpatient care.

What if I am in crisis right now?

If you or someone you love is in immediate danger, call 988, call 911, or go to the nearest emergency room. Mental Wellness KS is not an emergency crisis response service. If the person is medically stable and needs ongoing residential, PHP, or IOP care after crisis stabilization, our admissions team can help discuss next steps.
